PRELUDE
1650

“Where is she?” the woman wailed.
The man clasped her to his chest. His arms wrapped tightly around her, restraining her while tears streamed down his face and she tugged at his arms. “She coming Taabia, dey bringing her. Prepare youself.”
Taabia’s gaze snapped to his. “She dead?”
He hesitated then shook his head slightly.
Taabia understood though. Her daughter, her youngest child was dying. “Let me see her, I want to see her.”
A noise broke the stillness of the night and two men walked out from around the cabins.
By the light of the full moon, Taabia could see they carried a body between them. The clothing hung off the young girl’s slender form in tatters, like it had been ripped from her. Her blood watered the dry ground with each step the men made with their burden. Taabia drove her fear inward, her screams were internal now, she didn’t wait for them to come to her, shoving away from the man restraining her, she rushed to the others.
She stopped the men carrying her child and gathered her daughter into her arms, the man, her lover, the father who’d come to warn her took the child’s legs, helping to carry some of the weight.
Taabia kissed her daughter’s bruised and bloodied face. Her tears mingling with the blood. “I got ya, I got ya,” Taabia crooned.
“Mama?” The voice was weak and weary sounding much like a small child, even though she’d seen fourteen summers.
“Yes, chil I’s here.”
“I’m sorry Mama, sorry. I shoulda listen.”
“Shh…none o’ dis your fault.”
They took her back to the cabin, Taabia shooed all the men out of the room.
Two of the women skilled in healing on the plantation came running when they’d heard. Even though none were as skilled in Vodou or natural and unnatural arts as Taabia, a priestess of Damballah. It was not enough.
She cleansed her daughter’s body, but it had been damaged beyond even her repair. Sometimes when a soul was badly damaged, it no longer had the strength to live in the body. But it takes the body with it before it departs. This was her daughter. She could see her life essence flickering, dimming where once, it had been vibrant and full of enough light to brighten up a room.
Her baby died in her arms that night.
“They will pay,” Taabia whispered as she lay her daughter upon the funeral pyre and set the branches to flame. Standing silent watch, surrounded by her lover and the other slaves on the plantation as the fire consumed her child’s body.
She meditated for the rest of the night and the day, gathering her strength, calling upon the older gods of her motherland, the ones who hated man, the light and dark powers that be.
At midnight when the storm she’d called broke and Jakuta the Lightning God and the others of storms ruled the skies, she left her hovel. Taabia walked out into the night making no effort to shield herself from the elements, in fact calling all of them to her, their powers fueling hers. Embracing the night. At first, heavy clouds hid the full moon from sight, but still she called upon Arawa, Goddess of the Moon for vengeance. Until a sliver of its lunar light broke through, bathing her in its rays.
She stood in front of the manner house, as she raised her arms and face to the sky. Lightning flashed above the house, the storm battered at her hair and clothing but she stood firm in her need. When she spoke, the wind amplified her words for all within the walls of the house to hear.
“I curse you Clyde deNuit and you brothers. I curse you and all you beget. Each generation one son be born. One son only. At the turn from child to man, he be ruled by the call of the full moon. You act like selfish beasts, then let you be beasts. On all fours shall you crawl the earth until the pull passes. Every cycle from moonrise to moonset, your beast will rule. Until the day one of mine deem you selfish no more.”
Thunder rumbled overhead bearing her words to the heavens. The oldest of the deNuits stood at the window and watched the crazy slave woman. His brothers were passed out in their rooms down the hall, but the thunder had awoken him. He sneered at his slave daring to threaten him. He thought he’d have the overseer whip her for her bullshit in the morning. Meanwhile, he turned away to go back to bed with his wife, wishing he had that young slave girl again. He and his brothers had shared between them the night before. The way she’d fought them making him hard all over again. Too bad she died. Well, there were more where she came from. He’d just closed his eyes when the house seemed to shake like it had been hit by lightning.
When the moon next traveled around the earth and sat in full illumination like the sun, the deNuit men dropped to all fours and turned from men to beasts. The next morning when the sun sat high in the sky and the men woke up naked and in the fields covered in blood, they had reason to fear the witch woman’s word. But it was too late for them all. She’d taken her secrets to the grave where the overseer had put her; almost a month to the day after the master had her whipped to death.

All the Gods are dead. Long live the Gods. Never forget.

To be reborn time after time knowing, remembering; each past life is both heaven and hell for Ledo. But as a son of Ares, the Fates rule his life. His rebirth serves one purpose: to stand with Zeus when he faces Cronus and to die doing it. That never bothered him. He’d lived many lifetimes and knew his destiny, willingly embracing it.

But then came Aria, she too was his destiny, his reward. Both his pleasure and his pain. Protect her he would, even if it meant going against the Fates.

As a scientist, if Aria couldn’t see it, taste it, touch it or calculate it, it didn’t exist. Until the man from her beautiful dreams showed her everything she believed in was a lie. And now that she knew that, her life was forfeited.

LINC (Book 3)

All the Gods are dead. Long live the Gods. I am aware.

Linc had grown up having to kill to protect himself and his best friend. So, death and he were intimate friends. Then when his best friend turned out to be non-other than the Greek God Zeus and needed him to once again watch his back, Linc had no choice but to grab his Glock and say, hell yes.

Little did he know, he had many trials to go through to be able to help his friend. Not the least of which was helping a woman conquer her fears and not run from a man like him. But she was an integral part of his existence. He could not let her go.

Mina had resigned herself to being alone all her life. She could trust no one with her secrets, she couldn’t even trust herself. She’d been forced to kill to protect those secrets and she didn’t want to risk the one man who might have accepted them. Not after she’d almost cost him his life. Yet, help him she must. Spring 1860…

Sojourner, stared at the man sprawled across the cement floor of the blood-soaked cage. Many months had passed, and each day had been the same. Blood and death. She looked at the empty cells around the room. They had once been filled with men and women. The few who remained alive had been taken to another area, she did not know why and would not remain to discover. She never thought she would be able to erase the screams of the men and women from her mind.
She returned her attention to the scarred man. Many nights she had brought water to him, and cleaned away his blood. But, as she kneeled before him, she knew he would no longer drink. He had not taken a sip for many days.
He had made his decision.
She had made her decision.
Escape.
His would be by death.
Hers would be through the front door, when the sun was high in the sky. With her fingertips, she gently touched the cold metal hidden in the folds of her skirt. The man Kirill called Frederick had left the key on one of the blood-soaked tables on his last visit. No one noticed when Journey simply picked it up while she cleaned away the death they had left behind. If she made it outside, she knew they would not be able to follow her. She would have hours of sunlight to protect her.
Softly, she touched a hand to the matted curls of his dark hair.
He groaned. His eyes opened, and quickly closed.
Lowering her mouth nearer to him, she whispered, “If I take you with me, you would die.” She glanced around the room again, at the empty cages. “You will die if I leave you.” She could not take a wounded man with her, but no matter how hard she fought against the thought, it would not go away.
“You will use the key that you have discovered, and escape. With you, you will take the man whose wounds you tend so faithfully.”
Whether awake or asleep, the words would not go away.
Before she stood, Journey whispered to her wounded one, “Tomorrow. Tomorrow, we will run from this place.

About Kim Golden

KimGolden
I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and spent most of my childhood summers in Smithfield, Virginia. I’m not sure where my love of words comes from, but I’ve loved books since I was a child and I’ve loved writing stories for as long as I can remember. My parents wanted me to do something practical–be an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, an accountant. But I always dreamed of doing something completely different. I knew I wanted to be a writer, even if it took a bit of time for me to get to that point. It led me to spend more time writing stories than studying physics and chemistry in high school. It’s what led me study literature and then work on an MFA in Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University. And when I finished my master’s degree, love led me away from the US and brought me to Sweden. So what do I write? I write about relationships, about love. I often write about interracial relationships. I like reading stories about people who are different, who see past the differences and fall in love. And those are the stories I also enjoy writing. I write stories for people who know that love comes in many colors.

SHAKEN (Book 1)
is Free until 12/7

There’s something to be said for lust at first sight.
Redd wasn’t looking for Mr. Right but Mr. Right now. But the moment Nikko walked into her bar she felt that first rush of need. She wasn’t shy about getting what she wanted even if only for one night, which was all her chaotic lifestyle would allow. Besides, not many men wanted to date a woman who worked in a strip club, even if she were the bartender. It tended to make them sneer. She didn’t know which was worse. When they found out she was part owner or when they found out she was a law student. That intimidated the hell out of some. She didn’t really give a damn.
Nikko wasn’t looking for anyone. His life was full as the senior associate at a law firm and he just found out he was being considered for partnership. His life was about to become even busier. Then something happened that left him shaken. What should have been one night of uninhibited pleasure became a weekend, then it became more. How the hell did that happen? And did he want it to stop?
Shaken is also book 1.5 in The Young Guns Series.

FROZEN (Book 3)

A perfect moment can change it all.

Lani

Ever have that one perfect moment in time, when you know exactly what you’re supposed to do, who you’re supposed to be in life? Well, that had been me, and it certainly had lasted for more than a moment. I’d decided to pledge myself to God and help others in his name. Selfless, that was me and I was weeks away from taking my final vows. Then something happened, I met someone and suddenly I questioned everything.

Rom

I’ve always lived my life on my terms. Granted, I never thought I’d grow up to be a male stripper. But what the hell, I made good money and now, I had a shot at something more. And the women. Yeah, I loved women but they came and went. I preferred it that way. Didn’t matter which of us left first, as long as one of us did. I didn’t do attachments. Then something happened. I’m no saint, but I saved someone and wanted an attachment. Only to find out I could never have her.

Chapter 1 Excerpt

“Thank you again for coming, Lani,” Corrine said, giving me a quick hug.
“Yes,” Lara added, kissing my cheek. “Thank you. Love you. Feel better.” She squeezed my arm.
“I will. Love you too.”
“Want me to help you get a cab?” Lara asked
“No, I’ll just call one.”
“Okay. Text me once you get home,” Lara said.
I rolled my eyes. “Sure, sure.” It’s not like I lived alone. I hadn’t moved out of our parent’s house yet. I wouldn’t until I took my novitiate vows in a month, but I worked everyday and went to church every other day. Only returning to our parent’s house in time for dinner and to sleep.
I made my way to the elevator while my sister and her companions went in the other direction to one of the rooms for the strip show. Part of me was a little curious and wanted to see one, but the other more practical part of me knew I shouldn’t. Having a drink in a bar was one thing, watching the strip show, well something else entirely. Besides, the world seemed a little tilted. I stepped onto the elevator and leaned against the side to right myself. I’d just pressed the button for the first floor when someone stepped on. My head ached so much I couldn’t even glance up to see who I shared the ride with. I stared at the floor and could see the dark shoes and pants legs, the size hinted at a man.
The door closed, the elevator dropped and my body swayed but I didn’t fall.
The man who now stood behind me said, “Whoa!” He held onto my waist as though to steady me.
“Tha—thank—y…” Something was wrong with my voice. My words didn’t come out right. How much did I have to drink? The elevator door opened and I took a step forward to get out when the entire floor spun up to meet my face, but strong hands held onto me.
“I got ya.”
“Everything okay?”
A male’s voice asked, one I didn’t recognize.
“Yeah, she’s fine. Just a little too much to drink.”
I didn’t recognize the one who answered either. “Na…” I wanted to protest, but the arms holding me up were the only reason I could walk forward. I leaned against his strength, depending on it.
I felt myself being placed in the back of a car. The scent of smoke and stale air made me want to puke. “Cab,” I muttered.
“Yeah, cab.”
Hands reached across my lap to snap my seatbelt, pausing to stroke my breasts. Wrong this was all wrong. “Nooooooo!” I cried out.
